Description
Scott: A Surname History — Volume 40 of The Surname Histories Series. The Border name — from Middle English Scot, “man from Scotland,” with Oxford’s three senses and the standing caveat (no evidence supports the “Gaelic speaker” reading): the drystone-wall name of the Border country, on paper since c. 1120, when Uchtred filius Scot witnessed the Selkirk charter. SCOTT stands No. 36 in the 2010 U.S. Census with 439,530 bearers — No. 36 in 2000 too (420,091), a +4.6% rise (+19,439 bearers), the rank held while the count grew — 60.21% White, 32.92% Black (the crossing’s legacy), 0.51% Asian/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 1.18% American Indian/Alaska Native, 2.59% two or more races, 2.58% Hispanic — sitting directly behind Wright at #35 and completing the series’ sixteen-book running echo (Lee #21 → Pérez #22 → Thompson #23 → White #24 → Harris #25 → Sánchez #26 → Clark #27 → Ramírez #28 → Lewis #29 → Robinson #30 → Walker #31 → Young #32 → Allen #33 → King #34 → Wright #35 → Scott #36), sixteen consecutive volumes at sixteen consecutive ranks. The signature story is Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832), the Wizard of the North — the ballad-collecting boy of Sandyknowe who anonymously published Waverley in 1814 and invented the historical novel, built Abbotsford on the Tweed, refused bankruptcy, and wrote his way out of ruin at the cost of his life — told in full, with one verified plate: the 1822 oil portrait by Henry Raeburn (National Galleries of Scotland; public domain). The heraldry is framed honestly: with dozens of documented Scott branches there is no single universal Scott arms, so the plates show what the record actually holds — the Duke of Buccleuch’s quartered shield, the ancient gold-and-blue bend of Murdiston and Branxholm, and the Abbotsford arms confirmed to the Wizard’s heirs, never to Walter himself; and a gazetteer of Scott places maps Selkirk, Abbotsford, Dryburgh Abbey, Fort Scott, Kansas, Scottsdale, Arizona, Abbotsford, British Columbia, and the eleven Scott Counties.
